Fact Check: Council Chambers Cost (2 of 5 in a series)

Following the Town's "declaration of fiscal emergency," a resident asked "how much did it cost [the] Town to acquire and renovate the Town chambers? How much does it cost annually for this?"

The Town Manager only partially answers the question, ignoring acquisition and operating costs, and stating the chambers cost $1,177,800.

What we found:

  • The TM's answer only includes construction-related costs and omits the $1.2MM cost of the real estate purchase itself, which the council approved 5-0.

  • The TM's answer also ignores the annual operating cost, estimated at $30,000/yr by a prior town manager.
